Chapter Three: Phenomenon (Being Very, Very Stupid)

This is the major scene that everyone has been waiting for. Why? Because. It’s the car crash scene. You know it. You’ve watched the trailer.
Car Crash

It’s definitely one of the most anticipated scenes. Because it’s the first time that the reader really gets a chance to see what Edward is capable of. And he’s pretty capable.

Bella wakes up to the snow and ice and realizes that

“today was going to be nightmarish”

If she only knew how truly nightmarish it would be. She drives to school without an incident as her father had been kind enough to put chains on her truck. He says more with his actions than with his voice, and Bella is starting to learn that. Perhaps that is why Charlie and Renée didn’t get along very well, Renée needs to be told. Charlie needs to show.

After Edward swoops in and rescues her, Bella continues to ask how he did it. But then he gives her a look that makes her question her own question! He is vulnerable. He has placed his secret, his whole existence in Bella’s hands. And that was something that normally was definitely out of the question.

We get our first banter session that clearly reminded me of Darcy and Elizabeth’s banter. Bella tries to get information and Edward tells her she hit her head to hard. Oh…if I was Bella I’d have half a mind to punch Edward.

And then, Edward gives Bella the greatest thing of all–a mystery. She doesn’t seem like the sleuthing type (I should know, I studied Nancy Drew in college and wrote my senior thesis on her), but yet she wants to know him. And my favorite part is after she realizes how obsessed she is, she tells herself “Stupid, stupid, stupid.” Renée should be proud that she has programmed her daughter so much that Bella can’t get past what her heads says to allow her heart some luxury of speaking.

But her heart does get a word in edgewise–if only through her dreams.
