Chapter Five: Blood Type (Or Yeah…now I’m suspicious)

So, we make our way into the INFAMOUS chapter. I don’t need to describe what happens because anyone who has read this book KNOWS this chapter. Why? Because it’s the first time that we are starting to see something familiar with the whole vampire folklore. Whoops–I spoiled the surprise.
Well, the first part involves her sitting with him in the cafeteria for lunch. She buys a bottle of lemonade and then sits with him. She says:

It was hard to believe that someone so beautiful could be real.

Again. One of my ALL time favorite quotes. Then, she questions him. I think it’s the first time we see the cooler, more relaxed, funny Edward.

“I decided as long as I was going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly.”

I laughed really hard when I read that. Way to be a pessimist, Edward.
They have the funny conversation where she starts giving her theories. The Spiderman/Superman/Batman theories–which all sound comparatively respectable until we discover what he really is.
THEN! He does something that I never picked up before.

He looked down, stealing my bottle lid and then spinning it on its side between his fingers.

Now, why would that quote be so interesting to me? Because!!!! I found a neat Q&A from Stephenie Meyer on the Twilight Moms forum. She spills some good stuff. Now, don’t get mad–this doesn’t say a lot, but it does spoil a teeny, tiny bit of Midnight Sun, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Q: Can you tell us one thing that Edward kept of Bella’s that he cherishes?
A: A bottle cap. (You’ll understand when MS comes out)

Wouldn’t you be curious too? Come on. A bottle cap? I’m curious.
Well, the chapter continues, they do blood typing in class, Bella can’t stand the sight of blood, yadda yadda yadda. THEN, Edward shows up and takes her home. On the ride home he asks her how old she is. She says, “I’m seventeen.” Then he says, “You don’t seem seventeen.” Such a juxtaposition (literary comparison) to the trailer (remember the whole–how long have you been seventeen? Awhile.–I’m still trying to find that part in the book. I’ll re-mention it when I discover it.)
And then, Bella goes inside her house, leaving her knight in shining armor in his Volvo and her curiosity is far more peaked now. And she’s going to be pro-active from now on. Yeah–she’s more suspicious.

  1. I can’t wait for Midnight Sun to come out. I hadn’t heard that little tidbit before. I’m even more excited now. I love this chapter because though I hate to admit I’m a sap and when Edward swoops her up I think I may have swooned. ;-)

  2. I have come to a really weird realization/question… Is Bella able to have children? This particular question was sparked in my mind after having read the series for the fifth time. Honestly though… you never hear about the Cullens going crazy/bloodthirsty on Bella once a month, do ya?

  3. According to my research, this is what Stephenie has said:
Several girls wanted to know if Edward would have a more difficult time being around Bella when she?s having her period. Answer: Yes, a little bit, but he would never say anything about it, he’s much too much of a gentleman. And Bella would be way to embarrassed to ask. (It’s not the same as a cut, though. It’s sort of “dead” blood, if you get my meaning). (according to Twilight Lexicon Personal Correspondence #2)

  4. ohh okay… thanks so much that has been bothering me for a while!:)

  5. the “–how long have you been seventeen? Awhile” thing is in the chapter 9 “Theory”.
